Are you someone who has always wanted a dog but the fact that you stay in an apartment has restricted you from adopting one? There are many concerns for apartment dwellers when it comes to adopting dogs such as the dog’s need for space and movement, the need to walk dogs at a frequent interval, especially given the hectic work schedules. While these concerns are valid, there are some dog breeds that are better suited for Indian apartments. These dogs take up less space, are lower on energy levels and hence their requirement for walks or runs are lower than others. Read on to find out which dog breeds are better suited for apartment life.

Apartment suited dog breeds:

  • Pug: Pugs are low-maintenance dogs that do not require large spaces. They are super-friendly and great with children. Their life span ranges from 12 to 15 years. They typically require approximately 20-30 mins of walk daily. Pugs are vulnerable to overheating, so it’s preferable to walk pugs away from harsh sunlight.

  • Bulldog: Bulldogs are one of the most common apartment dogs. They love staying indoors and goofing around. Their exercise needs are manageable and daily short walks suffice them. However, just like pugs, bulldogs should also stay away from long sun exposure as it can increase their body temperature which can adversely affect their health.

  • Beagle: These adorable tail waggers are a perfect addition to an apartment. They enjoy the company of humans and love to stay indoors. They are sweet and gentle most times but do get hyper at times and hence require frequent stimulation. They are great companions to people who love a playful and energetic dog.

  • Shih Tzu: Considered to be highly adorable dogs, Shih Tzus make a good companion for apartment residents. These cuties are mischievous, playful and independent creatures who can easily co-exist in small apartments. Due to their small size, their exercise requirements are low but this breed has long hair and hence requires a good grooming session at least once a week. Shih Tzus are also great with children and can become your kid’s favorite friend in no time.

  • Chihuahua: These cute little nuggets, though loud and zealous, are low maintenance when it comes to grooming and exercise. An ideal type of dog to consider if you have a busy schedule. They instinctively take on the role of a watchdog or companion to suit their owner’s needs. They love to cuddle and be petted. However, considering how loud and noisy these doggies can get, it is necessary to provide early, consistent training. Chihuahuas can easily be accommodated into small apartments.

  • Poodle:  Another cute option for apartment owners are poodles. These smart, agile and graceful fur-babies assimilate into new environments quickly. They are easy to train as they adore their owners and are always eager to please them. They are energetic and love jumping and playing around. Their small size makes it easy to accommodate them into small-sized homes.

  • Indian Spitz: These furry white doggos are an intelligent bunch who require little training. They are friendly and loyal which makes them an ideal choice of pet for anyone in general. They are also active and like to play around which means not a dull day in your life. Their silky fur doesn’t allow mud and dirt to collect easily but they are prone to shedding so routine grooming is necessary. Indian Spitz are a more active breed for a larger apartment and frequent walks would be a consideration for this breed.

  • Golden Retriever: Although Golden Retrievers are larger in size as compared to most of the breeds mentioned above, retrievers are friendly and playful making them a favorite amongst most households. These apartment-friendly dogs, whether puppies or adults, are known to be exceptionally gentle. Additionally, Golden retrievers are intelligent and easy to train. However, due to their high energy levels, they require daily exercise and their lavish coats require high-maintenance to upkeep its beauty.

  • The dog breeds mentioned above are some of the best apartment-friendly dogs in India. While they adapt quite easily to apartments, just like any pet, they require grooming, exercise, dog training and occasionally veterinary visits. Ensuring those needs is the key to a happy and well-behaved dog. We hope you are able to find a pawsome friend of your own!
