DIY Cat Toys For Your Purrfect Cat
Do you have a cat who insists on playing with household items instead of her toys? Does she prefer a cardboard box to a cat tree? Well, if that's what she prefers, let's give her what she wants. In this blog, we'll tell you how you can tweak some of your household items to create some fun interactive toys for your cat. Read on to find out!
'DIY' Cat Toys
One of the most common household items, toilet paper rolls, often become the object of entertainment for cats. If this plain roll is so intriguing to your cat, imagine the spike in her curiosity levels when you upgrade her "toy". You can make more than one type of toy from multiple rolls. For instance:
- With one roll, you can add treats inside then glue shut both ends, ensuring that no treats can escape. Make small holes on random parts of the roll which are large enough for the treats to slip out. When your cat paws or rolls the toy, the treat would fall out, delighting your cat.
- Another way to make good use of a toilet paper roll is to attach playful accessories like pom-pom balls, feathers or ropes on the toy. Simply use a hot glue gun to glue pom poms or whatever accessories you may want, evenly around the toilet paper tube. These will allow the cat to grab onto something while playing. It would be better if the accessories are bright and colorful as they would attract your cat’s attention for the better part of the day, keeping her amused and occupied.
One would think old clothes, especially ones with tears and holes, are only useful as rags, but we are here to tell you otherwise. Old clothes can be repurposed into fun new toys for your cat, here is how:
- Take an old t-shirt, preferably colorful, cut the t-shirt by dividing it into multiple strips of clothing. Tie up the pieces of clothing, forming a knot in the middle. Make sure the knot is strong, not easy to undo or your kitty’s fun will be limited. It would be better if the t-shirt is a bit thick so that the knot would also be thick. If that is not the case, you can also roll multiple pieces together and then tie the knot. A thicker knot is preferable as cats like to chew and scratch a lot, hence if the material is durable, it becomes easier for them to play without causing a rip too quickly. You can even cut the either ends of the knot into frills for added fun.
- Another toy you can make is by using socks. SImply take an old sock or two, fill it with fabric or paper scraps and then sew or tie up the opening. With this sock toy that acts as a ball toy, your cat can paw at, pounce at, chase or nibble on it, ensuring a fun-filled and playful day.
Do you often have cardboard boxes lying around from frequent deliveries? Does your kitty make herself comfy inside the box? Well, rather than throwing these boxes away, you could create something that your cat would enjoy. There are several ways to make use of a cardboard box and it generally depends on its size. For example:
- If it is a shoebox, you can simply add a small cushion inside to make her a peaceful but comfy place to nap.
- Mid or large sized boxes are perfect as cat houses. Cats enjoy their solitude, therefore, a cardboard box would make the perfect hideout for your cat. All you need to do is take a box, cut a big enough hole in the middle to act as the entrance, making it easy for your cat to go in or out. The entrance can be covered with a light cloth that can act as a curtain. Inside the box, you can add a pillow or a blanket to make it cozy for your cat. You can even make small holes at random places that would enable your cat to look outside without anybody looking at her. You may want to add a few toys for your cat inside so that they don’t get bored.
- If you have several boxes, you can attach the boxes to create tunnels leading them from one space to the next. Ensure that the boxes are stable and secure before letting them play in it. Make random holes on each box to let the light in so the tunnel is not completely dark inside.
If you have extra sisal ropes lying around of which you have no use, you can get creative and make some very cool and ideal cat scratchers. Here is how.
- If you have cardboard in the shape of a tube, you can turn it into a simple but beneficial scratching post. Take a sisal rope, apply some glue on one end of the rope, stick that part on top of the tube then start rolling the rope around the tube. When the rope comes to the end of the tube, apply some glue to that end of the rope and stick it to the tube. The glue ensures that the rope won’t come off easily. Make sure to pull the rope tight around the tube so that it stays strong.
- You can also make use of an old stool with wooden legs. Wrap the sisal rope taut around the wooden legs of the stool. Secure the ends of the rope to the wood with some hot glue.
As you can see, there is no shortage of cat toys you can make at home if you put your mind to it. Sometimes, a cat does not need a fancy toy but only a simple one that she can play with to her heart's content. If you are able to repurpose cat toys just from old household things, you are also helping the environment through this upcycling. So, make your cat's day as well as care for the environment by modifying some of your old household stuff into new but familiar toys for your furry friend.
